Short answer
It depends on the provider. QR Code Generator, QR TIGER and Uniqode deactivate dynamic codes when a trial ends or a plan lapses, according to their own help pages. Flowcode, Bitly and Kizmo keep existing codes working after you downgrade or cancel. Static QR codes never expire at any of them.
A dynamic QR code does not contain your web address. It contains a short link run by the QR provider, which then redirects to your page. That is what lets you change the destination after printing, and it is also why the code depends on the provider: if the provider stops redirecting, every printed copy stops working.
Before you print a dynamic code on menus, packaging or signs, check what your provider does when a trial ends or you stop paying. Here is what each provider says in its own documentation.
What happens to dynamic codes when you stop paying
| Provider | Free option | When a trial ends or you cancel | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| QR Code Generator (PRO) | 14-day trial | Dynamic codes created in the trial are deactivated when it ends; scans go to a service page | Support article |
| QR TIGER | 3 dynamic codes, 500 scans each | "If your plan expires, it will stop working" | FAQ |
| Uniqode | 14-day trial | Dynamic codes become inactive when the trial expires or you cancel | Pricing FAQ |
| Flowcode | Free tier | Existing codes keep scanning after you cancel; you can manage only your 2 most recent | Help article |
| Bitly | Free plan | Existing bit.ly links keep working after a downgrade; custom-domain links need the domain to keep pointing at Bitly | Support article |
| Kizmo | 3 dynamic codes, no card, no scan limit | Every code keeps redirecting to its last destination on every plan, including after cancelling | Never-hostage guarantee |

How to choose
- You already use Bitly for links. Its existing links keep working after a downgrade, so there is little reason to move.
- You want marketing features and many codes on one plan. Compare the paid plans of the larger providers, and read their cancellation terms first.
- Your codes guard money or safety, such as parking meters, payment and donation codes, or restaurant tables. Choose a provider that tells you when a code may have been covered by a fake sticker. Kizmo watches each code's normal scans and alerts you when a busy code suddenly goes quiet, and its optional check screen shows people your business name and destination before they continue.
- You only need a code that never changes. Use a static code. It contains your address directly, needs no account and never expires. Kizmo's free generator makes them without an account or watermark.
Protect codes you have already printed
- Scan each code and note the address it opens before the destination loads. If it starts with the provider's short domain, the code depends on that provider.
- Check your plan's renewal date and the provider's cancellation terms.
- If the provider deactivates codes, plan a reprint before your subscription ends, or keep the plan active until you have replaced them.
- When you reprint, choose either a static code or a dynamic code from a provider that commits in writing to keeping it working.
Why Kizmo keeps codes working
A redirect costs very little to run. Kizmo charges for features, such as the verified check screen, custom branding and longer analytics, and never for keeping a printed code alive. The commitment is part of our terms: codes stop only if their owner pauses them, if our safety review confirms abuse, or if the law requires it.
Frequently asked
Do dynamic QR codes expire?
The code itself never expires, but the provider's redirect can be switched off. QR Code Generator, QR TIGER and Uniqode deactivate dynamic codes when a trial ends or a plan lapses. Flowcode, Bitly and Kizmo keep existing codes working after you downgrade or cancel.
Which QR code generator is free and never expires?
Any static QR code never expires, and Kizmo, QR TIGER and others make them free. For dynamic codes, Kizmo's Free plan includes 3 with no card and no scan limit, and they keep working on every plan.
Can I move an existing dynamic QR code to another provider?
Usually not. The printed code points at the old provider's short link, so only that provider can redirect it. You need to reprint with a new code.
