QR code tracking and privacy: what you can measure responsibly

Updated · 4 min read

Short answer

A dynamic QR code can count scans, unique visitors per day, approximate country and city, and device type. None of that requires storing IP addresses or personal data. Kizmo keeps only a salted, day-scoped hash for unique counts and never stores raw IPs.

What scan analytics can tell you

  • How many times each code was scanned, by day.
  • Unique visitors per day.
  • Where, at the level of country and city (from the network, not GPS).
  • Which devices: iOS, Android or desktop.

What they cannot tell you

Who scanned. A QR scan carries no name, email or phone number, and it should stay that way.

How Kizmo handles scan data

  • No raw IP addresses are stored.
  • Unique counts use a salted hash that changes every day, so visitors cannot be tracked across days or codes.
  • No cookies are set on the redirect.
  • Scan data is used only to show you your own statistics and to detect tampering.
